Identification of need

We want to find the best ways in which health and social care providers can identify that people with a learning disability are approaching the end of life.

We know that one of the reasons why people don’t access palliative and end of life care support, is because GPs, other professionals and carers don’t realise that it is needed.

We will set up a co-production group of people with a learning disability, families and health and social care staff. We will work together to:

  • Look at interventions, tools and resources found in the Scoping Review  and early Case Study  findings

  • Co-design workable methods for identifying palliative and end of life care need in people with a learning disability

  • Test these at the four study sites

  • Finalise the methods of identification, including an assessment of what works locally and what can be generalised to work nationally

This part of the study will run from October 2025 to May 2027.

It is carried out at Kingston University, by:
